| Traditional Chinese martial arts techniques and teaching
methods have been refined over the course of centuries and have produced remarkable
results that are only now being generally appreciated in the West. The traditional martial
arts syllabus encompasses not only fighting techniques, but also healing techniques and
systems for optimizing personal health and well being. The traditional one-on-one
teacher/student arrangement allows for flexibility in harmonizing the teaching to the
specific needs, requirements and capabilities of each student.Master Helen Wus distinguished accomplishments as a martial artist,
practitioner of Chinese medicine, physical trainer, and teacher flow from the training
system passed down through several family generations. Her grandfather, Grand Master Wang
Zi-Ping enjoyed an illustrious martial arts career. In 1928, he was appointed Director and
principal master of the first official martial arts school in China. Master Wus
parents are respected as the foremost practitioners of Chinese martial arts in the United
States. Her mother, Professor Wang Ju-Rong, is the first female professor of martial arts
in Chinese history. Her father, Dr. Cheng De Wu, belongs to the first generation of
professors of Chinese medicine. The family system continues to grow, as each generation
builds upon this legacy.
Master Wu has studied all of the major martial arts disciplines
under a number of eminent masters, including her famous grandfather. She also offers
decades of experience in sports medicine, the rehabilitation of workplace injuries,
traumatology, and dietary and nutritional guidance. She embodies over 28 years of teaching
experience, serving as lecturer of Sports Medicine at the Shanghai Teachers
University from 1982-1989, and guest lecturer at York University and the Canadian Memorial
Chiropractic College. She has authored a number of published works on various aspects of
the martial arts.
As of January 1, 2000, Master Wu began to offer a formal program encapsulating the
major martial arts disciplines. Master Wu has always been a pioneer and her program is
exceptional in its depth and range. Above all, the program is inspired by Master Wus
conviction that the practice of martial arts is not simply a set of movements and
techniques, but can form the basis for a healthy and rewarding way of life.
Areas of training include techniques for achieving optimal health, a study of the
internal and external martial arts, and instructors training. Please see the
syllabus for a detailed description of program content. |
| INDIVIDUALIZED
SYLLABUS
Wu De: Martial Arts Moral Character encompasses character-building behavior
and attitudes on the part of both teacher and student. Humility, respect, hard work and
perseverance are not only fine qualities of character, but can also be considered
technical requirements for achievement in the traditional martial arts.
Parents in the West are beginning to appreciate the role that traditional martial arts
can play in developing and reinforcing strong patterns of moral conduct for their
children.
Chinese Culture and History /
Philosophical Underpinnings of Chinese Martial Arts Systems: Through such ancient
techniques as the teaching-story, Master Wu conveys the vast and rich historical and
cultural tapestry that underlies the martial arts. These elements of the curriculum not
only provide a context and underpinning for the martial arts courses, but also reinforce
the value of cultural exchange. Western and Chinese cultures have much to offer one
another, and Master Wu appreciates the wealth of knowledge and ideas that her students
have given back to her.
